Designed to avert a total lack of emergency communications in the wake of another Katrina-like disaster, Jeff Pulver and Tom Evslin have submitted a petition with the following suggestions (to the FCC):

We primarily ask for a mechanism to ensure that individuals are reachable after a public crisis that causes communications networks to go down. We propose a solution that we think could provide immediate relief before the next hurricane season and before more elaborate rules might feasibly be established. We ask simply that the FCC require any provider obligated to provide E911 services to establish an alternate communications service for affected customers via either: (1) activating for each customer a voicemail service that would be accessed by incoming callers dialing the customer's phone number, or (2) providing expedited local number porting to an alternate service provider selected by the customer, including porting to a number outside of the geographic area and/or rate center. Either of these proposals would provide a technically feasible and reasonable means of ensuring that consumers remain connected during emergencies.

I really, really like these suggestions. The first one is just a common-sense suggestion. But the second one has benefits beyond the scope of disaster preparednes. Faster number porting mean better competition. Better competition means better uptime.  Now Jeff has also said that he doesn't intend to pitch IP-based infrastructure using Katrina as the impetus. I say "why not?"

Check out all of Jeff's reasoning by clicking here.

Spintronics, a company I had up until now never heard of, has introduced a product that allows you to connect your PBX system to the Skype network via analog (read: legacy trunks). Now, the description on their site doesn't say exactly how many trunks the thing supports. (Actually, the description I read is written in fairly broken Engrish.)  Actually, ActionTec has had similar gear for going on a year now. The VoSky line of products does the same thing: connect PBXs and analog phones to Skype via analog POTS-style interfacing.

Great right?

Not. The problem with all of these Skype-certified hardware products isn't that they're Skype-certified, it's that they're hardware.  Most PBXs being sold today support IP call signaling, if they aren't entirely soft-driven. Skype, too, is soft-driven. So PBXs ought to be able to trunk directly to the Skype network without having to go through intermediate analog transcoding and interfacing, as is the case with these products. But a software-only trunk isn't possible because Skype has chosen to keep their proprietary signaling standards closed and rather heavily encrypted--forcing those who want to interface to the Skype network into the domain of PC-dependent (and largely Windows-dependent) hardware.

What good are shiny little plastic interface boxes with a cute logo and cords hanging out? Connectivity should occur as 100% IP, 100% software. Eventually, once Skype figures out a non-bubble-esque business plan that can monetize its pretty-amazing P2P network, they'll enable software-only access to the network, and then we'll see the enterprise adoption rate (which everybody was blogging about last week) really go up.

But until then, I'm not plugging any of this Skype-certified crap into my PBX.

After signing up with a VoIP service provider you need to get a phone which connects to the Internet. Some providers will include an IP phone as part of their package but other plans specify that you supply your own equipment. IP phones have an Ethernet jack that plug into the router of your broadband Internet connection. Ethernet connectors are similar to regular phone connectors but about twice as wide. If you want to use a traditional analog phone set with VoIP you can get an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) -- a small box which contains the hardware and software necessary to convert your voice into digital data and send it over the Internet. The ATA has an Ethernet connector and a regular phone plug connector. The advantage of using an ATA is that you don't have to buy new phones -- just plug in the phone you are currently using, either wired or wireless. An IP phone, however, is more convenient for taking advantage of many of the extra features that are included free with your VoIP account -- call display, call routing, call forwarding, voicemail and many others. You can still use these features with an ATA, but you may need to configure your VoIP account at the service provider's web site. There are many IP phones on the market ranging from simple residential phones to complex phone terminals designed for business use. Even basic models, however, have an LCD display for caller ID and phone configuration. More advanced models may have features like speakerphones, headset interfaces, customized rings, and programmable keys which allow you to quickly access certain functions of the phone. Do you want to go wireless? Although you can't yet get the freedom of a cellular phone with VoIP, you can still use wireless phones within an IEEE 802.11b wireless network. These phones are suitable for residence, campus and enterprise use. Besides being cheaper, included in the basic service package are things like call waiting, call display, and call forwarding. You can take advantage of all of these features with an IP phone. When your phone rings, the LCD screen displays the caller information. You can choose to accept the call or redirect it to voicemail or an error message. Rather than manually routing each individual call, you can set up rules for certain types of calls. For example, anonymous calls could be routed to your voicemail, or calls from someone you wish to avoid could be routed to an error message. Calls can also be forwarded to an outside number. Some VoIP services operate the same as traditional phone services. Call waiting, for example, allows you to take a second call if you are already using the phone line. When another call comes in you hear a short beep and you can switch between the two calls by pushing a button. If you wish to keep your calls anonymous you can block your caller ID. This way, when you are calling somebody with call display, your name or phone number will not be shown. This feature can be set for all of your calls or just for selected ones. If you do not wish to be disturbed, you can route all calls to your voicemail or to a message saying that you are unavailable. With this setting, your phone will not ring until you reset it. A very handy feature of IP phones is the ability to store names and phone numbers. You can scroll through the phone book or set shortcut keys to commonly called numbers. Every call that comes in can be automatically added to your phone book and you can easily edit or delete numbers at any time.

Telecom guru Rich Tehrani touched on one of my personal areas of interest: the radio industry and music production in general. When Rich posted some information about payola (Alt-diva Liz Phair was recently accused of bribing radio stations to play her songs), he triggered some thoughts of my own, which I recorded over at my Signal To Noise Home Recording and Instruments Blog:

So few stations worth listening to are actually independently operated (though here are two that actually are: WNWV and WEOL), and the bureacracy underlying radio programming is a very top-heavy apparatus. Stations with local on-air personalities refuse to play locally-produced music, even  if the local musicians are members of a songwriters' union such as ASCAP or BMI. Why is this?

Payola, man. Payola. It's no different when  consultants in L.A., New York, and Nashville program song selections for their member stations across the country than it is when local DJs get bribed by distribution executives at record companies.

[A letter I wrote to the editors of the local newspaper, in response to several stories lamenting the loss of local telecom jobs.]

Hi Editors [of the Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria, OH]:

You recently reported that 35 of the 800 layoffs undertaken by CenturyTel would be happening in Lorain, OH. This is an obvious disappointment to those of us living in the western Cleveland suburbs.  But, if you understand the current shifts in the telecom industry, these layoffs aren't really a surprise. In fact, it is clear that lots more shakeups and layoffs at "Ma Bell" are coming.

The people of Lorain County should understand why Century is struggling, instead of merely reading Sherrod Brown's labor-lobby talking points on the matter. The reason for these layoffs is that CenturyTel and other local dialtone carriers are trying to remain competitive in a consumer-friendly market that demands a leaner telecom industry. The deregulation that occured with the Telcom Act of '96 was the beginning of a much more competitive telecom industry landscape, and technological changes have been rapidly commercialized by new dialtone competitors like Vonage, Packet8, and Comcast. Frankly, CenturyTel just can't compete any more.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if we hear about similar layoffs at Alltel in the coming months, too.

The telecommunications industry is undergoing rapid change. The long distance billing business collapsed when the Feds made it legal for local phone companies to sell long distance minutes, and pressures from better phone technologies like VoIP (Voice over Internet) are making it more and more difficult for large local dialtone providers like CenturyTel and Alltel to profitably deliver phone service.  VoIP providers can deliver unlimited local and long distance calling, complete with caller ID, voicemail, and reasonable voice quality for as little as $20 a month. The service is delivered using your broadband Internet connection.

A year ago, I didn't know anybody who subscribed to a broadband phone provider such as Vonage (who is $30/month cheaper than CenturyTel's residential phone service). Today, one in four of my friends uses a VoIP provider. Many, like me, have cut off all ties to the local phone company, opting instead to use VoIP or rely on a cell phone--instead of a traditional phone line--for home service. And in an area where  the number of business lines is relatively low (Lorain, Sheffield, Amherst), this consumer shift has really hurt CenturyTel's profitability. As businesses follow consumers in turning more and more to VoIP and wireless dialtone services, the larger local carriers (like SBC and Alltel) will begin to feel the pain too.

Meanwhile, Sherrod Brown and the telecom union don't understand the real problem. Our telecom infrastructure, in order to be globally competitive, must be constantly improved.  If there comes a cheaper way to deliver phone service to the masses, then the masses will buy it.  The telecom workers must therefore move their trade into a new skillset, one that is capable of being meaningful within the framework of new technologies. The telecom union needs to pony up on wireless and IP networking skills if they want to remain relevant. Because, like it or not, the industry isn't going to keep it in neutral just to keep workers employed. Consumers demand value, and companies profit by providing that value. The phone company is no exception.

Sincerely Yours,
Ted Wallingford

You can try out VoIP for free! All you need is a headset attached to the sound card of your computer. Next, download one of the many VoIP software packages. Skype, Gizmo, Free World Dialup, and Net2Phone are some of the big names. With the software installed, invite all your friends to download the same software and when someone is up and running, give them a call! Most of these "soft phones" (as they are called) allow you to make and receive calls at no charge anywhere in the world as long as you are not connecting to a cellular or landline phone. They are easy to use simply click on a contact name to initiate a call. Features such as call display, call forwarding, voicemail, and conference calls are included at no extra charge as long as both parties are using computers. A step up from headsets is Internet phones. These feel a lot more like "real" telephones -- they ring, they have regular number pads, and you use them like traditional telephones. They plug into the USB port or sound card of your computer. These phones are still considered soft phones because you need VoIP software installed on your computer to make and receive telephone calls. As we progress up the VoIP ladder the next is an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) which allows you to connect a traditional analog telephone to a broadband modem. ATA's are usually provided free of charge when you sign up with a VoIP service provider. This is similar to signing up with a regular phone company -- there is a monthly charge and you may have to sign a contract tying you into the service for a certain period of time. The ATA is simple to use. It connects to a broadband modem - either a DSL modem connected to your traditional phone line or a cable modem which attaches to your cable TV connection. Any traditional analog telephone can be plugged into an ATA. You do not even need a computer in the house to use this type of VoIP connection. Using an ATA for Internet phone calls is transparent. You simply pick up the phone and dial a number just as you would with your regular phone service. Anybody calling your phone number will not be aware that you are using VoIP instead of PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). If you are travelling, you can take your ATA with you and receive phone calls anywhere in the world by connecting it to a broadband modem. Any calls to your phone number will be routed to your ATA (which has an identification number making it unique in the world) at the same cost as the call to your residence or business would cost. The third option for VoIP is to have an IP phone. Don't confuse IP phones and Internet Phones. IP phones plug directly into the modem, but Internet phones plug into the sound card or USB port of your computer. An IP phone is a handset which has all the necessary hardware and software installed in it. You connect an IP phone to a broadband modem and make or receive calls the same way that you would make or receive calls with an ATA. The advantage of an IP phone over an ATA is that you do not need an extra telephone set to plug into the ATA -- it is a completely integrated unit. IP phones also have the advantage of having all your phone numbers stored in the phone as well as a display screen which gives you information about incoming calls.

Friends in the Asterisk.org community,

There is a lot of cool stuff going on in Asterisk development, things that will change Asterisk and make it work better in your organisation, make it easier to sell in your area or give you more consulting oppurtunities - in short, functionality that will make a lot of sense for you users.

However, developers can't really get anywhere without a dialog with the users. You know what you need, you know what is missing and how you would like to

make Asterisk a better choice.

I am planning to send out a description of new features now and then, to inform you about what is going on, but also to get some feedback. The bug tracker is not only a tool for developers, but also for testers and users to react to changes and contribute.

*** ITU T.38 -- Fax over VoIP

Fax over VoIP is a hot issue. VoIP service providers encourage people to switch to VoIP but often forget to mention that faxing over VoIP is like russian

roulette. On a local LAN, it might work if you pick a clear channel codec like G.711. Steve Underwood, member of the Asterisk developer team, has writen a good article about the problems involved and the solutions for it on his web site, the URL is: http://soft-switch.org/foip.html

T.38 is an ITU standard for fax over VoIP. To simplify, the idea is to decode the fax audio stream at the ingress point, convert it to a data stream that is not

sensitive towards jitter or delays and encode it into audio again if needed at the other end of the call - if you can't convert it to an image somewhere in the middle and print it directly, or send it by e-mail.

*** T.38 PASSTHROUGH in Asterisk

Steve is the main contributor behind the work for T38 support in Asterisk. He's also

the author of spandsp - the fax application that many use in Asterisk. The first part

is to be able to send T38 calls to your Asterisk PBX and make Asterisk recognize

this and forward the data stream to another endpoint that supports T.38.

Asterisk won't be an T.38 endpoint, but will handle T.38 calls properly, regardless

if the T.38 was offered in the original call setup, or if the caller suddenly sends a fax in the middle of a call (a re-invite). The requirement is that the incoming channel and the outbound channel both supports T38. If not, the call will be

declined in a proper way.

When this is tested and stable, work will continue to see if we can make Asterisk an T.38 endpoint.

This is a very important addition to Asterisk. There is code for testing available.

If you are interested, please check this URL in the bug tracker:

http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=5090

I think this is a big step for Asterisk. Do you? If so, don't forget to say "thank you" to Steve Underwood - Coppice!

Have a nice weekend!

Nice job RTX! We thought this USB phone was feature rich before. Now it is awe inspiring. Isn't CEBit great? We get all this neat stuff.

Get the User Manual here.

Thanks to Torben who contributed to this story. Torben Nyhuus, is Skype Journal’s Associate European Editor, a Super User on the Skype Forum and also user of the RTX DualPhone.

RTXhandset.png

The new DualPhone is a software upgrade!

The upgrade is a simple, safe three step process. The base station gets done in about 15 seconds. Patience is required for the next step... the handset must be placed into the base station. After a 10 minute wait to ensure the batteries are changed sufficiently the software will then be uploaded to the handset.

The features we liked best:

1. Support for Skype voice mail

2. Skype chat notification

3. Support for Skype call waiting

But there is a lot more....

Users will love the menu feature:

RTX Introduces New USB Cordless DUALphone Firmware Update with Enhanced Skype 2.0 Support
RTX Upgrades the Award-Winning USB DUALphone with New Features

Noerresundby, Denmark, March 9, 2006 – Today RTX , a world leader in wireless product development, announced a free USB DUALphone firmware update. The USB DUALphone can now check Skype™ voicemail, receive incoming chat alerts and perform other Skype functions, all from the DUALphone’s sleek, cordless handset. The update adds to a long list of existing features, such as wideband audio and Skype online presence.

The USB DUALphone is a Skype Certified hybrid phone that allows consumers to combine the benefits of traditional phone lines with the advanced Skype Internet calling capabilities using a single cordless phone. When placing a traditional call, consumers dial as usual using the telephone button or they press the PC button to dial using Skype. In addition, the USB DUALphone’s cordless handset gives an audible “beep” when a Skype contact’s online status changes, and allows users to play and delete Skype voice messages all without having to be near a computer.

“This USB DUALphone upgrade shows how Skype is moving beyond the PC and integrating into the lives of consumers,” said James Bilefield, Skype Europe general manager. “Skype works with partners like RTX to provide our customers with as many device options as possible, making Skype a convenient mobile offering.”

The USB DUALphone recently won Tom's Hardware's Readers' Choice Award 2005 for “Best VoIP Product” category and is the only Skype Certified cordless phone that offers wideband audio, the ability to toggle between Skype calls, Skype chat notification and accessibility to Skype features such as voicemail and online status, without being in front of a computer.

“This update further eliminates the need to sit in front of a PC to benefit from Skype,” said Jorgen Elbaek, President & CEO of RTX. “At RTX we developed the USB DUALphone to be the best option for people who want to have convenient access to the advanced capabilities of Skype without having to change their regular phone line and calling habits.”

The included USB DUALphone charging station simultaneously connects to a traditional telephone socket and to a PC via USB. The USB DUALphone fully supports Skype to Skype, Skype to landline, landline to Skype and landline to landline calls.

USB DUALphone Features:
• Support for Skype voicemail (new)
• Skype chat notification (new)
• Support for Skype call waiting (new)
• Ability to toggle between Skype calls (new)
• Selection of which online-status to display in handset (new)
• Skype/landline hybrid phone functionality
• Wideband audio for superior sound quality
• Skype certification
• Skype contact list and online status displayed on handset
• DECT cordless technology (WiFi-friendly)
• Rechargeable and replaceable battery
• Backlit LCD display
• Standard headset connector
• Multiple handset capacity
• Upgradeable firmware
• Range: Indoor 150 feet/Outdoor 1000 feet
• Distinctive ring indicating landline or Skype calls

Pricing and Availability
The USB DUALphone update is available as a free download on the Web at www.dualphone.net. The USB DUALphone is available online at the Skype Store at www.skype.com and at selected retail outlets. Suggested retail price for the USB DUALphone is 119 Euro.

One Web Day logoThe One Web Day dinner last night started something important for me.  Susan Crawford asked important questions. Why do I love the Internet? What has it done for me? What have I done for it? What can I do to leave it better than I found it?

I first used ARPAnet in 1979 to pass my project's logistics data to modelers at the Naval Postgraduate School. I was used to terminal based computing, even modem access to timesharing systems, but this was different. This was our computers talking to theirs, peers becoming a network, if only for a little while. It changed our work, slashed time from our project, gave us access to distant talent.

And it became the Internet.

We're starting now, in cafes and schools and hospitals and offices, around the world. We're seeding activities "to create, maintain, advance, and promote a global day to celebrate online life: September 22, 2006." Note: This is a little off-topic for Asterisk but I felt you still needed to read this if you have not heard because it could affect us in the future.

Consumer IP telephony service Vonage has filed a complaint to Canadian regulators over plans by local telco, Shaw Cable, to charge a C$10 ($8.60) a month premium to customers of VoIP service. The charge ostensibly covers to cost of providing a higher quality connection to VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) users. Vonage describes the levy as a "thinly veiled" VoIP tax.

By using internet connections to make long-distance calls instead of conventional voice circuits users have the potential to make far cheaper calls. Vonage argues Shaw's fee undermines the healthy development of the market.

Skype Unveils Small Business Solution

New Web Support, Hardware and Software Partners Enhance Small Business Communications

Luxembourg – March 9, 2006 – Skype™, the global Internet communications company, today announced Skype for Business, a solution designed to help small businesses easily manage communications, improve productivity and reduce costs. Skype for Business expands existing Skype small business offerings to include: Skype for Business Web site, a resource dedicated to business support; new Skype hardware from Plantronics; and new features in Skype for Business Control Panel (formerly named Skype Groups) to simplify management of grouped users and pre-paid services.

Skype for Business introduces a dedicated Web site aimed at simplifying global communications and group administration for companies with fewer than 10 employees, a market represented by more than 50 percent of businesses already using Skype. This new resource, available now at the Web site skype.biz, makes it easy for companies to use Skype and find valuable resources to maximize security and improve productivity. Other useful features include integration with the Microsoft Outlook toolbar and new products optimized for small businesses are also available through Skype for Business.

“We know from listening to our more than 75 million customers that 30 percent of them are regularly using Skype for their businesses and most of these are small companies,” said Niklas Zennström, Skype CEO and co-founder. “Skype is dedicated to being the champion of these companies by making it incredibly easy for them to be productive, save money and have access to a sophisticated global communications solution that helps them compete.”

SKYPE FOR BUSINESS FEATURES

Skype for Business allows administrators to centralize the management of company-wide paid services and usability tools. Skype for Business Control Panel is available in 18 major languages: Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and six currencies: Brazilian real, British pound, euro, Japanese yen, Polish zloty and U.S. dollar. The Skype for Business Control Panel offers a new auto-management feature that enables group administrators to make large credit purchases to one account and simultaneously distribute Skype credits, topping-off all customer accounts. Skype credits can be used for Skype premium offerings including SkypeIn, SkypeOut, voicemail, personalization and third-party conference calling.

“We’re using Skype and it has reduced our voice communications costs significantly.” said Mark Ehr, Director of Product Marketing, Proxima Technology (www.proxima-tech.com), a company that makes service management software. “We frequently hold international four-way conference calls between our offices in Australia, the US and the UK, with usually a mix of Skype and SkypeOut, and it has the potential to save us thousands of dollars. We also use Skype to forward our office phones to our SkypeIn numbers when we're travelling, it's great to be at a hotel in London, receiving free SkypeIn calls, and my callers don't realize that I'm not sitting at my desk in Denver.”

SKYPE CERTIFIED BUSINESS HARDWARE

Plantronics today announced its Internet-optimized Voyager 510 Bluetooth headset solution featuring a plug-and-play USB Bluetooth voice adapter. “Skype for Business coupled with our new Bluetooth headset is the ultimate tool for small businesses,” commented Philip Vanhoutte, EMEA Managing Director, Plantronics. “You no longer need to carry a multitude of devices. Our Voyager 510 Bluetooth headset solution is multipoint, allowing customers to switch seamlessly between mobile phone and Internet calls.”

Other available high-quality products optimized for small businesses include:

  • Actiontec: Vosky Exchange allows company PBX systems to connect with up to four Skype callers
  • Linksys: Cordless Internet phone provides freedom of movement; a convenient alternative to Skype calls on the PC
  • Polycom: Computer Calling Kit, an option for Polycom’s SoundStation2™ and SoundStation2W™ (wireless) conference phones, enables the conference phones to also serve as the microphone and speaker for Internet calling
  • USRobotics: USB Internet Speakerphone enables hands-free, high-quality Skype calls

THIRD PARTY BUSINESS SERVICES

Skype has partnered to offer enhanced services to business customers. Examples include:

  • Convenos: The Skype Certified Convenos Meeting Center delivers an on-demand Web collaboration and conferencing tool so customers can run productive, cost-effective meetings (convenos.com)
  • Digitrad: 1Touch Connect translates the following languages into English: Cantonese, French, Mandarin and Spanish (share.skype.com/directory/live_interpreter_by_1touch_connect/view/)
  • Salesforce.com: Skype for AppExchange brings Skype features to Salesforce and all the on-demand applications on AppExchange (appexchange.com)
  • Vapps: High-speed conferencing service enables Skype customers to create moderated calls for up to 500 Skype, wireless, or telephone participants (highspeedconferencing.com)
  • WebDialogs: Unyte allows Skype enabled businesses to share documents, presentations, applications and/or PC desktops with anyone connected using a Web browser  (webdialogs.com/unyte)

Skype already offers small companies the market advantage by lowering operating costs and increasing productivity. Existing Skype features that increase productivity in the workplace include:

  • Presence: Colleagues can see at a glance whether their co-workers are online, are forwarding their incoming Skype calls, or are unavailable. This allows callers to form ad hoc conference calls or online meetings instantaneously, a competitive advantage over the old ways of organizing a conference call
  • Mobility: Skype customers can log into any computer, laptop or PDA anywhere around the world and access their Skype account and contact list
  • Contact List and Global User Directory: Skype eliminates the need for address book maintenance with its central contact list – callers can send contacts and share entire groups of contacts in their buddy list with others
  • Privacy: Skype calls are end-to-end encrypted for superior privacy
  • Ease-of-use: With Skype, there is no expensive equipment to buy

Skype is aiming for small businesses. And apparently, the primary appeal of Skype in the small business is its ability to undercut Centrex and measured rate business phone lines.  But while one of the quoted consultants refers to Skype as the "champion of microbusiness", the article is quick to point out that services like Vonage are also much cheaper than traditional business lines, and without the questionable, secretive, and distributed Skype network.

From Business Week:

Take centrex service, which is aimed at companies. The service can run $50 to $60 a line each month, far more than comparable consumer VoIP capabilities. So centrex is used in only about 10% of U.S. business lines, says Alan Martinovich, principal at tech consultancy Adventis. While demand for this service is rising, many businesses are looking for lower-price options, says Jon Arnold, principal at J. Arnold & Associates, a VoIP consultancy.

And the number of low-cost small-business service packages has been limited. Vonage, the Web-calling outfit expected to go public this year, offers two small-business plans, starting at $39.99 a month (see BW Online, 2/9/06, "Vonage's Iffy IPO"). Enter Skype. "Someone needs to champion the micro-business," says Klein.

“We don’t believe IP telephony is a cost-reduction case. I fundamentally believe that the real value is not cost reduction, but how it changes the business," said Don Peterson, CEO of Avaya at a conference this week.

For the record, I agree with him. His point is that, to sustain the sell rate of VoIP-enabled equipment, you can't do it by pitching the cost advantage of convergence. Sure, they're there. But they aren't the real breakthrough, they aren't the real transformation. Instead, Don wants businesses to focus on the way convergence can change business processes and transform the way people communicate--to marry communications to application processes. THIS is the sex appeal of VoIP in the enterprise.

Yet, the rags all ran headlines that missed the point, like
"Avaya CEO says VoIP may not lower costs" (Computer World)
and "Avaya CEO says VoIP may not lower costs" (CIO India).

Mobilemag reports that the Palm OS will soon have a piece of VoIP software called MobiVoIP which will allow origination of Vonage-style VoIP calls from a Palm device. My opinion is that the service won't earn much money and people will just ask "why"?   I mean, the only devices with enough bandwidth to support the voice applcation are going to be voice-enabled devices anyway.  Why even bother either with VoIP?  The place VoIP shines is where data access is cheap and plentiful, and it isn't either with Palm devices (or PocketPCs). Of course, WiFi is cheap and quick, but I would think that the vast majority of voice users need more mobility than what can be afforded by WiFi.

Skype2PBX? Here is a first hand story from Jeremy a very happy Skyper in the UK. Cambridge, UK to be more precise. Jeremy, the Technical Director of Z-Tech, leads a real cool group of experts in industrial process control.

Jeremy: “Our Office Phone System is a Panasonic TDA30 PBX (it has VOIP capabilities but we are not using them) with 3 analogue telephone lines in, and 7 extensions. We used a Skype to PSTN Adapter from Actiontec to link it to Skype.

tn7_wizard.png

“Jeremy how big a deal was it to set up the PBX to accept a line from Skype?"

"Adding the extra line to the hunt group was just a matter of marking the port as 'in service' and then adding it to the list so that the handsets know the line is available. The PBX is programmed via some windows View image">friendly software via USB it's not a chore! It took about 2 minutes to set up the PBX."

tn7_HPIM0276.JPG

"Mind you it's a bit Heath Robinson at the moment due to the extra PC involved that isn't rack mounted like the rest of the kit and of course there are wires everywhere. But the system does work, and work very well so far!”

Bill: “Why did you connect Skype to your PBX?”

Jeremy: “We intend to move all our lines to VoIP when we believe it is viable - this is the first step. We can try it out cheaply.

And, yes Bill, we now have a Call Transfer function. But we like better is that it gives us an extra line out - 4 lines instead of 3. If we asked BT (British Telecom) for another line they want £100 setup, plus £50 per quarter plus VAT... Skype has no setup fees and lower call rates than BT too.
We have 70 employees and about 30 of them have their own PCs. I am not sure of the cost savings but the VoSKY Internet Telephone Wizard cost us £40 then there is the cost of the PC."

Bill: "What are the advantages for your customers?"

We tell people that they can call us for free using Skype they love it, we've done something for them, made it easier for people to get in touch! Employees, potential employees and of course, customers.

However - we are not cutting our BT lines just yet - Skype has got to prove itself and prove itself in the medium/longer term - we don’t know if it will continue or how it will be in a year’s time.

"Our Contact Us page on our Web Site View image
is creating excitement with customers because they can call our switchboard via Skype."

"Also some of our staff are from overseas, Czech republic, Australia, etc - and they like it as they can now call home for free - and are spreading the Skype VoIP word at the same time."

Thanks Jeremy for sharing your story with our readers.

After spending a few hours over a couple of days with Z-Tech I found they are what their web site touts them to be, "A YOUNG BUSINESS and, like all youngsters, we’re full of energy.” Very creative energy at that.

Russ posted a probing blog about how Shaw Cable is attempting to screw our Canadian friends by charging $10 per month to institute a quality of service provision. My question is this. If Shaw makes most of their money by slinging access lines and then charging a monthly fee to keep the current flowing on those lines (which they do), why doesn't competition dictate that Shaw just throw in the QoS as a standard feature?  I know the answer, and it sucks: because Shaw has their own finger in the voice pie, and they want to leverage the last mile to screw Vonage.  Plain and simple.  Good old poli-business.  Now, the issue of net neutrality looks like a last-mile issue, not a trans-internet issue.

From AndresS Skype Staff

In order to improve reliability and stability of our central contact list we have had to disable the list for all versions of Skype for Windows from 1.4.0.84 to 2.0.0.73 inclusive.

To continue using the central contact list without problems please make sure that all your Skype versions are updated to the latest release (Version 2.0.0.90) available here: http://www.skype.com/download/

What happens if I am currently using a version which falls in this version range and is affected?

The client continues to work normally, but the contact list will not be synchronised with the contact server. If you make any changes in your contact list, these will not be visible in any other computers where you are using this Skype Name.

Why has the central contact list been disabled for older versions?

We have had an abnormally large increase in traffic to our server that controls the central contact list which was causing a number of users to lose their contacts when upgrading Skype or logging in at a different computer. We have investigated this increase in traffic and discovered a problem within a number of older releases of Skype which is causing additional, unnecessary, traffic to be sent to the server.

Can I backup my contacts?

You can manually backup your contacts on your computer so they have a record of them that can be used at any time.

Regards,
The Skype Team

In order to backup your contacts go to Tools -> Archive Contacts -> Back up Contacts to file to create an archive file that can be used later if needed.

To restore contacts from file go to Tools -> Archive Contacts -> Restore Contacts from file.

VoIP has lots of advantages over a regular phone service. However, like any emerging technology, there are still a few kinks in the system. However, as standards are developed it becomes more reliable and achieves greater acceptance. It is inevitable that VoIP will eventually replace traditional phone service in fact, phone companies are already taking advantage of the technology to offer cheaper long distance rates. Advantages One of the main advantages of VoIP is the low cost. If you have a fast Internet connection (DSL or cable) you can make PC-to-PC phone calls anywhere in the world for free. If you wish to make a PC-to-phone connection, however, there's usually a charge for this but probably much cheaper than your regular phone service. You can also sign up with a VoIP service provider which charges a monthly fee in return for unlimited calls within a certain geographic area. For example, some VoIP services in the United States allow you to call anywhere in North America at no extra charge. Overseas calls are charged at a relatively small rate. Another advantage of VoIP is portability. You can make and receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection simply by signing in to your VoIP account. This makes VoIP as convenient as e-mail if you are travelling, simply pack a headset or Internet phone and you can talk to your family or business associates for almost nothing. Phone-to-phone VoIP is also portable. When you sign up with a VoIP service provider the Internet phone or adaptor that is used with that service is assigned a unique number. This 'phone number' remains valid even if your VoIP service is in Cleveland and you are connected to the Internet in Bangkok. An Internet phone is small and light enough to take with you anywhere. Simply plug it into a broadband connection anywhere in the world and you can make and receive calls just as though you were in your own home or office. There are many other features that make VoIP attractive. Call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and three-way calling are some of the many services included with Internet telephone at no extra charge. You can also send data such as pictures and documents at the same time you are talking on the phone. Disadvantages With all this going for it, it's a wonder that anybody still uses regular phone services. However, there are a few disadvantages to VoIP. Continuous service during a power outage and emergency calls are two of the biggest problems. During a blackout a regular phone is kept in service by the current supplied through the phone line. This is not possible with Internet phones, so when the power goes out, there is no VoIP phone service. One solution to this problem is to use battery backups or power generators to provide electricity. Another major concern involves emergency 911 calls. Traditional phone equipment can trace your location. Emergency calls are diverted to the nearest call center where the operator can see your location in case you can't talk. With VoIP, however, their is currently no way to determine where your Internet phone call is originating from, so most VoIP services cannot be used for emergency calls. There is an emerging standard called e911, however, which attempts to address this issue. VoIP also has problems with sound quality and reliability. Data sent across the Internet usually arrives at its destination in a scrambled order. This is not a problem for e-mail or documents because the data can be reassembled in the correct order once it has all arrived. Voice data can also arrive in a scrambled order but this is more of a problem because of the real-time nature of VoIP. In order to make voice connections with the least amount of delay, some packets may have to be dropped if they don't arrive in time. This can cause short periods of silence in the audio stream. The amount of data that is lost depends on the distance and speed of the connection. Some networks receive a lot of traffic and are more likely to cause dropouts in the audio stream. Creating dedicated data paths is one way to provide high quality audio connections. All these disadvantages will be overcome in time. There is a tremendous amount of work being done to increase the reliability and usefulness of VoIP. By 2007 most of the kinks will be worked out and VoIP will receive widespread consumer acceptance.

Based on the Cisco Service-Oriented Network Architecture (SONA) announced in December 2005, the Cisco Unified Communications system is an open and extensible platform for real-time communications based on presence, mobility and the intelligent information network. It uses the IT data network as the service delivery platform helping workers to reach the right resource the first time by delivering presence and preference information to an organization's employees.

Cisco Systems' IP-based PBX system was the only major system still not supporting a standard protocol that would cut the cost of voice over IP and pave the way for a new generation of VoIP applications. That all changes this week, as mounting customer pressure and the standard's potential finally convinced Cisco to get behind the Session Initiation Protocol.

The network-equipment vendor has planned a set of announcements that have the Session Initiation Protocol at their core. In addition to a SIP-compliant CallManager 5.0, they include SIP capabilities for Cisco IP phones, presence-awareness software, and multimedia communications software.

The messaging protocol delegates how VoIP phones establish contact and use call waiting, among other things. It will let customers mix and match VoIP products from different vendors. Support in CallManager 5.0 should make it possible for a customer to choose a cheaper SIP-based alternative to Cisco's VoIP phones, which can cost upward of $500 apiece. Cisco plans to support Research In Motion's BlackBerry and forthcoming Nokia dual-mode phones with Call Manager 5.0, though just about any standard SIP-based phone from two dozen or so vendors should work with the IP PBX.

Yes, this is a Billy Joel post.  But only because somebody had the audacity to connect phone stuff with Billy Joel. (Hey just last week we were connecting phone stuff with Pink Floyd, so I'm not casting stones!)  With great artistic integrity and excellent rhyme and meter, Jeff Pulver has re-written the lyrics of "We Didn't Start the Fire" to fit today's telecom industry:

We couldn't stop the mergers
They were always clinging
Since the phone was ringing
We didn't start the mergers
No we couldn't take it
And we tried to break it.

Reed Hundt, Bill Kennard, Michael Powell tried real hard.
Joe Barton, Kevin Martin, I wonder now what they are startin'.

Mr. Moore and Metcalf's Laws, Internet gives them pause.
The rules have changed, it's all deranged.

Rumor has it, long-time Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto was so upset about the devastating lampooning (also known as a "pulverizing") that he up and quit Billy's band!

Actually, Billy fired him over DeVitto's divulgence of personal information about Joel's struggles with alcoholism.

While we're connecting the dots, here's a picture of some kid named Billy Joel EATING a telephone!

Quoting news.com, Real Tech News has an interesting introduction to a technology being dubbed "wireless USB":

Wireless USB promises help for consumers frustrated with PCs sprouting a profusion of cables linking their PCs with printers, digital cameras, music players and external disk drives, said Jeff Ravencraft, chairman of the USB Implementers Forum and an Intel technology strategist. Wireless USB permits the same 480 megabits-per-second data transfer speed as the current wired USB 2.0 standard, but requires small radios inside PCs or devices rather than the cables.

This is, in theory, very cool. Low-power radio transmitter replaces tons of USB spaghetti and obsoletes the old reliable USB hub, right?  Right?  Wait a minute, you mean my existing USB devices won't work with it! BLAST.

My concerns are with how authentication works (does it?), and with the name "wireless usb".   This technology has more in common with Bluetooth than with USB in my estimation.  The only reason it's being called USB at all is because the USB standards body concocted it.  Being that it's wireless, it can be neither universal (meaning without authentication) nor serial (meaning sequential data transmission with very little to no error tolerance).  But can we digress, and I'll stop whining. Go read the article.

The only thing lacking is VoIP support (a common complaint with Parliant's telephony products).  Load PhoneHerald onto your OS X machine, and you're in business.  Here is Parliant's official description:

Powerful Automated Group Dialing
PhoneHerald is a broadcast dialer with Interactive Voice Response (IVR) capability for businesses and institutions seeking automatic group dialing, personalized message delivery and response collection.

With PhoneHerald you can give your Mac the job of reaching, notifying or surveying patients, parents, customers and staff members - freeing people for more productive work.

PhoneHerald's amazing features include sophisticated text-to-speech personalization, powerful data import facilities, flexible calling schedules, live forwarding of calls to support staff, a message builder that merges audio from different sources for interactive calls, plus call-generated to-do lists and email alerts.

Read on to find out how PhoneHerald Broadcast Dialer revolutionizes the way you approach group dialing. Or, experience group dialing in action by clicking on the PhoneHerald Broadcast Dialer Demo.

Powerful Automated Dialing
At its core, PhoneHerald is a powerful automated dialing system. It manages the process of making calls from start to finish, repeating calls if there's no answer, trying different numbers to reach a person, and keeping searchable, databased records of all activity.

Call Scheduling Convenience
PhoneHerald can call a group of people and complete those calls, but that's only the beginning! PhoneHerald can also call groups of people in the future - as far out as a year or more. PhoneHerald can even schedule individual calls. PhoneHerald also allows users to set up "good" calling periods on a weekly Monday-to-Sunday schedule, to avoid calling people at inappropriate times.

Flexible Calling Options
PhoneHerald calls multiple phone numbers, and can be set up to call in different ways - for example, call each person on your list in the order specified or randomized so the same person does not have to respond every time. PhoneHerald can also stop calling when one person from the called group responds - for instance when you want to get a field service rep among a group of reps to attend to a customer.

High-Quality Text-to-Speech
PhoneHerald's text-to-speech capability generates smooth and natural sounding voices, providing high intelligibility and naturalness to end-users through sophisticated unit selection and concatenation techniques. The automatic intonation reflects the meaning of the text, with respect to pauses, breath groups, punctuation and context.

Easy-to-use Friendly Interface
In the spirit of the Macintosh, PhoneHerald provides a powerful yet simple user interface to deliver its capabilities. There are no complicated configuration files or programs/scripts to be written. A simple central screen provides access to browse and "drill down" into your call history, and watch the progress of ongoing calls.

Interactive Choices for Callers
People called by PhoneHerald can select from many choices in your main message, using the numbers on the telephone keypad to make choices, either single-digit choices, or multiple-digit choices (ending with the # button). Choices can include transferring the call to a live operator.

Powerful To-Do List
PhoneHerald can create and manage a To-Do List based on the results of certain calls. Calls can be set up such that certain choices available to the called person cause a To-Do to be entered. For example, a patient could request call-back if they could not make an appointment. Also, incomplete calls can become To-Dos for future follow-up.

Email Options
PhoneHerald can be configured to email you when certain events happen - like when someone wants a call-back, leaves a message, or if a call cannot be completed after repeated attempts. You can also opt to receive messages when a set of calls is complete.

Scales for High-Volume Calling
PhoneHerald makes calls as fast as your phone line permits. PhoneHerald prepares to make calls in advance and keeps extra calls ready to go all the time, so that it acts quickly to start a new call once another is complete. And PhoneHerald's support for multiple phone lines allows it to scale well for higher-volume callers. PhoneHerald can make efficient use of multiple phone lines simultaneously with a single Mac.

Deliver Individualized Messages
PhoneHerald can be configured to deliver individualized messages. Messages can be customized with names, numbers, dates, schedule information, book titles, medical data, or any other personal information. Custom messages can be assembled using pre-recorded sound files or recordings made on the computer with a microphone, then individual information can be "merged" in using PhoneHerald's text-to-speech capability.

Data Import
PhoneHerald permits data import (names, numbers, dates, fields) from standard comma- and tab-delimited text files from databases, spreadsheets and contact managers.

Cost Effective
PhoneHerald runs on inexpensive standard Apple Macintosh computers, such as the Mac mini and iMac. A staff member can still use the PhoneHerald Mac as their desktop computer while calls are in progress. PhoneHerald does not require the use of expensive add-on cards or special hardware. Parliant provides a USB Telephone Adapter that connects to the computer and phone line. Multiple line support simply requires the connection of additional telephone adapters, and a standard USB hub.

Hartmann Software recently revved its voice/FAX answering software for Mac OS X to version 7.3.2. The main point of the revision was to fix a crash bug. But this program is actually quite useful.  If you have an internal Apple modem or a USB-attached modem, you're good to go. This is a cool shareware alternative to pricier commercial solutions like Phlink and PhoneValet. Of course, those packages have a ton more features.
